(BLIND RIVER, ON)- On July 3, 2016, shortly after 4:00 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and OPP Marine Unit responded to a fire on Matinenda Lake, north of Blind River.
Police attended the area of Graveyard Island and found a small cabin burnt to the ground. The fire had burnt itself out. There were no injuries or loss of life. The fire is not suspicious.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry were notified.
Obviously this story isn’t a big deal to you, but it is to the people who are residents and cottage on the lake. First of all the fire did not just ‘burn out’, my wonderful father and our wonderful neighbour, along with some selfless others worked tirelessly throughout the wee hours of the night and early morning to contain the fire themselves! Luckily they had fire hoses otherwise the whole surrounding bush and island could have gone up in flames. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, however the owners lost everything. Firefighters came the next morning to check for hot spots..but if it wasn’t for our fire hoses and those that rushed to help without so much as a second thought..things could have been worse. If you actually want to write a story make sure you check your facts first.
