On October 22, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the City of Elliot Lake.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., police observed a male known to them to be driving northbound on Highway 108, in breach of his recognizance.

The driver turned into the parking lot of a local grocery store.  The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed colliding with a shopping cart that was being pushed by a pedestrian.  Another pedestrian had to jump out of the way.  The vehicle came to a stop as it collided with a vehicle in front of him.

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and
  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the CC.

The accused was held for Bail Court and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on October 24, 2016.
