East Algoma OPP – Driver attempts to evade police, spike belt deployed

On January 16, 2017, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol duties on Highway 17, Mississauga First Nation.

Police observed a westbound pick-up truck on Highway 17 travelling at a high rate of speed and attempted a vehicle stop.  The pick-up truck continued travelling at speeds over 140 kilometres per hour and passing other vehicles dangerously.

Police learned the pick-up truck was stolen from the Toronto area. A spike belt was deployed successfully, west of Iron Bridge and the male driver arrested.

There were no injuries to the public or police.

As a result, Tyriel BECKFORD, 25 years of age, from Calgary, Alberta, was charged with:

  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime over $5000-in Canada, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the CC; and
  • Drive Motor Vehicle-No Licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on February 18, 2017.
