Search Underway for snowmobiler through ice

The search for a missing snowmobiler that began last night continues.
Initial air, land and water searches, as well as investigation into this event, have revealed that a 45 year old Sault Ste. Marie man travelling by snowmobile on the St. Mary’s River entered the water in the river a short distance east of Point Aux Pins Drive.

The search and rescue efforts will continue today with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently conducting search and rescue efforts on and near the waterways at Pointe Louise Drive in Sault Ste Marie.

Police received a call shortly before 1030pm on March 5th, 2017 indicating that a snowmobiler traveling on the ice in this area had gone through the ice.

Officers from Patrol Services, the Emergency Services Unit, K9 Unit as well as Investigation Services are on scene. Additionally Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, Ambulance, U.S. Coast Guard, Sault Search and Rescue, Chippewa County and Sault Ste. Marie Michigan Police Services are assisting in this effort.
