Members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will have an increased presence on our highways throughout the Canada long weekend. Officers will be focusing on the Big 4 which includes; impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and failing to use seatbelts.
The OPP historically sees an increase in the number of serious injuries and fatality incidents across the Province. Vehicle drivers are asked to take responsibility for their personal safety and that of their family. Make sure that all persons in the vehicle wear their seat belts. Drivers are reminded of the Distracted Driving Legislation that came into effect on October 26, 2009. Do not let your attention be drawn away from the task at hand of driving safely by any handheld communication and entertainment devices. Distracted drivers are a safety risk to themselves and others. All motorists should drive defensively. Leave adequate space between all vehicles. Respect the speed limit and never drive impaired.
OPP marine units will also be patrolling our waterways to ensure boaters are in compliance with the vessel regulations. Remember, impaired operation on the water carries the same fines and penalties as on the highway!
The OPP is committed to ensuring safe highways, safe waterways and safe communities for all Ontarians.
