On September 14, 2022, shortly after 11:30 a.m., members from the Sudbury, Manitoulin and East Algoma Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to traffic complaints of a stolen pick-up truck travelling from Sudbury and was westbound on Highway 17. The pick-up truck was travelling at excessive speeds of more than 160 km/hr on Highway 17.
At approximately 12:00 p.m., members from the Manitoulin OPP deployed a spike belt west of Nairn Centre at the Spanish River bridge and Highway 17. The pick-up truck ran over the spike belt and continued westbound on Highway 17.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma OPP deployed two spike belts in the village of Serpent River at the Serpent River Bridge and were successful in bringing the stolen vehicle to a stop.
As a result, the driver (Todd) Jeffrey MCVEY, 54 years-of-age from Sudbury was charged with:
Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
Flight from Peace Officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC
Possession Property Obtained by Crime over $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC
Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act
The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on September 15, 2022.
No injuries were sustained by the public, the driver, or the officers.
