For nearly two months, some 15 grade 3 to 8 students from École catholique Georges Vanier (Elliot Lake) have been participating with much passion in the school chess club. Thanks to the support of Gabrielle Noël de Tilly, grade 5 and 6 teacher, and Samuel Arsenault, grade 1 and 2 teacher, the students have the opportunity to meet twice a week. In addition to perfecting their skills in this discipline, students discover strategies and can compete against each other in friendly games.
Teachers at École catholique Georges Vanier agree initiating students to chess can be beneficial. For example, studies show that chess improves cognitive skills (including concentration, pattern recognition, decision making, mathematical thinking, problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and critical thinking). It also improves self-confidence and self-worth, attention span and increases memory capacity.
Éveiller la passion des échecs chez élèves de l’école Georges Vanier
Depuis près de deux mois, une quinzaine d’élèves de la 3e à la 8e année de l’école catholique Georges Vanier (Elliot Lake) participent avec passion au club d’échec. Grâce à l’appui de Gabrielle Noël de Tilly, enseignante de 5e et 6e année, et Samuel Arsenault, enseignant de 1re et 2e année, les élèves ont la chance de se rencontrer deux fois par semaine. En plus de parfaire leurs habiletés dans cette discipline, les élèves découvrent des stratégies et peuvent se mesurer un contre l’autre dans des parties amicales.
