Grade 7 students at École St-Pierre recently spent four weeks studying the effects of human impact on the environment. The independent research project, under the guidance of their teacher Mr. Philippe Mathieu, required students to represent on a large poster an ecosystem of their choice and display visually how it looked before and after human settlement.
Although the students selected different ecosystems, several chose a wooded area. A common theme noted through the work was the extinction of several species due to deforestation. For example, Mikelle Legault studied an area in Alberta affected by the oil sands. “I ended up choosing this location because I think it’s one of the most interesting places I could find. There has been a huge impact on the boreal forests,” she points out.

Les élèves de la 7e année de l’école St-Pierre ont étudié pendant quatre semaines les effets de l’impact humain sur l’environnement. Le projet de recherche indépendant, sous l’instruction de M. Philippe Mathieu, demandait aux élèves de représenter sur une grande affiche un écosystème de leur choix, de façon visuelle, avant et après l’installation humaine.
Bien que les élèves aient choisi différents écosystèmes, plusieurs ont retenu un lieu forestier. Un thème commun présent les travaux était l’extinction de plusieurs espèces due à la déforestation. Par exemple, Mikelle Legault a étudié une partie des sables bitumineux de l’Alberta. « J’ai fini par choisir cet endroit parce que je pense que c’est l’un des lieux les plus intéressants que j’ai pu trouver. Il y a eu un grand impact sur les forêts boréales », souligne-t-elle.
