On March 17, 2023, shortly after 2:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were at an unrelated call and observed a driver slumped over in a running parked car on Main Street in the Town of Thessalon.
Police approached the car and spoke to the driver and determined the driver to be impaired and was subsequently arrested. The driver was transported to local hospital in Blind River via Algoma Paramedic Services.
Once released from hospital the driver was assessed by an OPP Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and as a result, Nelson BURTON, 38 years-of-age from Sudbury was charged with:
Operation While Impaired-alcohol and drugs
Operation While Impaired-blood drug concentration
Possession of Schedule I Substance-Opioid (other than heroin)
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on May 11, 2023.
The driver was also issued a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
